I mentioned our weekend camping trips on the main page, I suppose some of it bears repeating.

Many of our camping trips, 7 of them a year, are weekend trips. For most of them, we gather in the 3rd Presbyterian parking lot sometime in the evening. We are there Friday and Saturday nights, and end up back home around noon on Sunday. Since I joined (in May 2001), I have been at every single one of those weekend trips.

Well, there were a couple camping trips when I had a Little League game Saturday morning. (I have been playing Little League even longer than I was in Scouts) I chose to play in the games. On one of the weekends, I went to the campout straight after the game. I was there from early afternoon to about 9 PM. That was a nice campsite, it's one of the sites that I have best remembered- click here for a drawing of the site. Since I was there for part of it, I still count it. The other time I had a Little league game, both the campout and the game were called due to rain. Since I was planning to go after the game, I still count it.

There was another campout canceled because only a few kids were interested- since I was one of the few kids interested, I still count it.

Of the NY state parks I have been too, I have been to most of them while on one of the weekend camping trips.

Letchworth State Park (have also gone there other times), Taughannok Falls State Park, Allegheny State Park (just this month), and a few that I can't remember at the moment. I have been to the Stoneybrook state park, but never camped there.

Some memorable weekend campout moments:

  • Fall 2001: The Scouts started throwing spare tent stakes at each other (yellow plastic ones) The adults stopped us when we started throwing the metal ones
  • Fall, either 2001 or 2002, Camp Cutler: We went stargazing Saturday night. There were NO clouds, so man did that look amazing. I remember recognizing the Milky Way band, the Dippers, and Orion. I also saw a shooting star, I think i wished for large quantities of money.
  • Fall 2001, Camp Cutler: Acorn Wars: We started throwing acorns at each other, in large quantities. Those things have little points on the end and they can hurt. I got lost while walking back to the campsite after Acorn Wars. (The adults were worried when i didn't show up for dinner)(They know how much I like food)
  • September 2002: It was a bring a friend campout, so I invited Marcus Johnson, a classmate. He totally got hooked on Scouts and was most deifinitely interested in joining. This campout had been at Letchworth State Park. I remember having to go on a 8-mile hike Saturday morning, we were quite tired by the end of that, and we went in our tent to rest. We heard the adults talkign about another hike and we said that, if there was another hike in the afternoon, we would have to be dragged out of the tent.
  • I forget when: There was one campout where only 8 or so Scouts went, and we had a lot of budget left, so we went in the nearest town on Saturday night to go bowling.
  • More coming soon?
